Timmins Men's Baseball League

08/24/2016 - Orioles fly past Red Sox

TIMMINS - The Champoux Homes/Wacky Wings Orioles cruised to a 5-1 win over the Lessard-Stephens Red Sox in Game 1 of their best-of-five Timmins Men’s Baseball League semifinal series at Fred Salvador Field Tuesday night.

The Red Sox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but that would prove to be the only offence they could generate in the contest.

Lead-off hitter Eryk Rice singled to get the ball rolling, moved up to second base on a Tim Chalmers single and then came around to score the game’s first run when Eric Comtois reached base on an error by Orioles first baseman James Daschuk.

The Orioles, who finished first in the regular season, battled back to tie things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

Lead-off hitter Eric Boulard singled and then stole second base to get himself into scoring position.

Two outs later, Dani Durepos blasted an RBI double that plated Boulard with the game-tying run.

The Orioles took a lead they would not surrender in the bottom of the second inning.

Mike Barber struck out to lead off the frame, but was able to reach base safely when the ball eluded Chalmers, the Red Sox catcher, for a wild pitch.

Barber then proceeded to steal second base and advanced to third base when Mario Fillion grounded out to short stop.

He was then able to come in and score the go-ahead run when Trevor Niemi grounded out to second base.

The Orioles added a pair of runs in the third inning to extend their advantage to 4-1.

Boulard reached base on an error by Red Sox second baseman Marc Drouin and stole second base.

Eric Paquette followed with an RBI single that allowed Boulard to score.

Paquette then stole second base to get himself into scoring position and was able to cross the plate when Marc-Andre Lavoie reached base on an error by Red Sox pitcher Brent Cleverdon.

The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Orioles were able plate one more run and make the final 5-1.

Darren Thib singled to open the frame, stole second base and one out later was able to come in and score when Barber grounded out to second base.

The only other hit for the Orioles was a third-inning single by Daschuk.

After the first inning, the closest the Red Sox came to scoring was the top of the fourth inning when they got back-to-back singles from Sheldon Lacroix and Randy Rice to lead off the frame.

Randy Rice was retired trying to advance to second base, however, and the Orioles were able to get the next two batters to end the threat.

Al Kaija also had a seventh-inning single for the visitors, but he was stranded at second base.

Niemi, who started for the Orioles, pitched six strong innings to earn the victory. He surrendered just the one unearned run on four hits, while striking out three batters and walking one.
